The WoodPoP initiative is pleased to share its new joint statement and policy brief on wood promotional programmes in Europe. This document is based on the Wood Policy Paper, expert inputs, in-depth discussions and collective reflection within our network, examining the strategic role of wood promotion in Europe’s economic, environmental, and social transition.
National and regional wood promotional programmes across Europe have long supported the responsible use of one of the continent’s most innovative renewable materials. Today, their importance is greater than ever. As the policy brief highlights, these programmes are strategic policy instruments, not just communication tools. When implemented effectively, they can strengthen competitiveness, foster sustainable development, reinforce urban–rural linkages, support climate change mitigation and generate high-quality jobs and skills that are rooted in cultural and regional traditions and connect urban and rural areas.
The policy brief illustrates the direct contribution of wood initiatives and programmes to overarching European and global objectives, including the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the EU Competitiveness Compass and the climate ambitions of the European Green Deal. It also emphasises the importance of bolstering the competitiveness of the European economy, both within the EU and in closely linked markets such as Switzerland, Norway and illustrates how wood-based solutions can bolster economic resilience, innovation capacity, and strategic autonomy.
It highlights their relevance for the New European Bauhaus, the Circular Economy Action Plan, and the EU Bioeconomy Strategy and similar strategies in other European Countries, particularly in promoting sustainable construction, strengthening industrial competitiveness, and supporting innovation and cohesion across European territories. By empowering wood value chains and raising public awareness of the importance of sustainable wood use, based on sustainable sourcing, the European Continent can further consolidate its position as a global leader in circular bio-based innovation and the transition to a resilient, circular economy, while improving the well-being of its citizens.
The recommendations outlined in this policy brief are submitted for consideration, together with an invitation to engage in further exchanges on possible avenues to strengthen wood promotional programmes across Europe. Sustained cooperation will be essential to ensure their effective implementation and impact.
