Parquet floors have always been a premium choice for both residential and commercial spaces. But what does the future hold? If you've ever wondered what the future of parquet looks like, you're not alone. The focus is increasingly looking at using the full sustainability and durability of parquet, and that brings interesting developments with it. Let's have a look!
Parquet: sustainability and durability per se
At the European Parquet Federation (FEP), our goal is not only to deliver the best products but also to contribute to a more sustainable world.
Sustainable wood flooring by definition
The demand for sustainable and eco-friendly products is steadily growing. People are looking for materials that are not only beautiful but also respect the environment. Parquet is:
- Made of legal and sustainable wood, including reclaimed wood;
- Manufactured by environment-friendly processes (energy efficiency, renewable energies...);
- Using constantly improved coatings and finishes with low VOC, water-based, etc.;
- A carbon storage, substituting fossil-based flooring alternatives with energy-intensive production;
- Circular - it can be used, recycled: reused as parquet or repurposed as wood-based panels for instance, and finally wood can be converted into bioenergy.
Longevity potential of parquet to be fully exploited
Nobody wants to replace its floor every few years. Parquet is a long-life product. Modern techniques make it possible to significantly extend this already long lifespan. This includes durable finishes that last longer. This also includes the possibility to renovate parquet onsite, extending its life and/or changing its style!
At FEP, we are promoting this tremendous advantage of parquet flooring through our FEP Refinishable Program. With its minimum 2.5 mm real wood top-layer (EN 13756), parquet can be sanded at least twice! Find more on the Program here.
Resilience is just as important
Thanks to new technologies, we can create parquet floors that are more resistant to wear and damage. These durable flooring options ensure that your floors look great for years to come, with little maintenance.
Ease of maintenance is another important factor. Modern parquet floors are designed to be easy to clean and maintain. This means less worry and more enjoyment of your beautiful floor.
Standards and certifications
To ensure the quality and sustainability of our products, we work closely with certifying bodies. These standards help us to meet the highest requirements and gain the trust of our customers. This process is part of our ongoing efforts to improve further parquet sustainability and durability.
Conclusion
As regards parquet flooring, everything revolves around sustainability, longevity and resilience. With trends such as responsible timber harvesting, innovative finishes, and robust materials, it is an attractive choice for anyone looking for beautiful, sustainable flooring options. At FEP, we are ready to lead and support these trends so that both our Members and end-users can experience the benefits.
